The occupying forces of Japan allowed only Karate to be practiced. Many Koreans were high up in the karate echelon with many years of training dedicated to karate. General Choi had revolutionary ideas to change the martial arts and have a purely Korean martial art. After years of study and political maneuvering he suggested the name Taekwando to unify many of the Korean martial arts under one name. -- Primarily a kicking art. There is often a greater emphasis on the sport aspect of the Art. Tae-Kwon-Do stylists tend to fight at an extended range, and keep opponents away with their feet. It is a hard/soft, external, fairly linear style. It is known for being very powerful.
